Frosted glass is the perfect way to maintain the privacy of your home, keep the natural sun light coming into your home, and incorporate your windows into the décor and style of your home.
Frosted Glass Window Treatments
When installing new windows you should not only consider what you will be able to see out of the window, but what someone looking in can see as well. If you are interested in having natural light in your home, and curtains or blinds are not the right fit, installing frosted glass windows might be the perfect solution. If you have new windows fret not, you can still create a frosted glass solution on your windows.
Sandblasting -- the process of using a machine blaster to blow sand at high speed at glass -- is a common way to achieve a frosted glass look for windows. However, unless you own your own sandblaster you will need to hire someone for this project. As such, sandblasting is recommended for big windows or for frosting multiple windows around your home. For smaller windows, a number of DIY methods exist for frosting glass including sprays, etching and frosted glass film.
Frosted Window Film
If you like to take on do-it-yourself (DIY) projects and want to experiment with frosted glass on your windows, frosted window film is a non-permanent and easy solution. Frosted film is great for people who are renting homes and would like to add some privacy to their home, but can’t make permanent changes to their rental unit.
Frosted window film can be applied to both big and small windows by following these steps below (as always, if you’re unsure about any of the steps, it’s best to hire a professional to help).
- Clean the window with soapy water, as using a window cleaner could harm the film.
- Spray the window using a spray bottle filled with an ample amount of water and a couple of drops of dish soap.
- Lay the frosted film on a flat surface and peel the backing off of the sticky side of the film, spraying the film with the water/soap mixture.
- With the sticky side of the film facing the window, line the top two corners of the film up with the top two corners of the window and place the film onto the window.
- Using a credit card wrapped in a cloth, smooth out any bubbles left under the surface of the film. Alternatively, you can spray the film with the water/soup mixture and use a squeegee.
- Dry the excess water with a cloth.
